Aluminum and glass doors, often called full view doors, trade the solid face of a steel or wood door for a grid of framed panels. That construction is what makes them the signature look of contemporary homes, storefronts and even indoor partitions. The trade offs live in the frame gauge, the glazing choice and the finish. The facts below come from Clopay product and buying guide literature.
Why aluminum for the frame
Aluminum is chosen for this door type because of what it resists rather than how strong it is. Clopay describes aluminum and glass doors as being made from a rust proof and corrosion resistant metal, which is why the full view style holds up on coastal and high exposure homes where steel would need more protection. The light weight of aluminum also lets the frame carry large panes of glass without an unwieldy door.
The frame itself is a structural extrusion, not a thin skin. Clopay publishes that its Avante door uses a 2-1/8 inch commercial grade aluminum frame. That depth is what allows the door to span the large glass panels Clopay highlights, which it says allow plenty of natural light into the garage. The same buying guide notes these doors can even be used as an indoor loft partition or a solarium door.
Panel fills, glazing and finishes
The defining feature of a full view door is that the panels are interchangeable. Clopay publishes that Avante panels can be filled with tempered glass, acrylic, Polygal or solid aluminum, so the same frame can range from fully transparent to fully solid. Glass choices then tune light and privacy, with Clopay listing clear, frosted satin etched, gray tinted, bronze tinted, mirrored and obscure options.
Finish is handled at the frame. Clopay offers anodized frame finishes including Clear, Bronze, Black and Dark Bronze anodized, alongside painted colors. Insulation is limited by the glazed construction, but Clopay notes its Avante AXU model uses Intellicore polyurethane insulated rails and stiles and reaches an R-value of 3.8 when paired with insulated glass, a modest number that reflects the glass dominated design.
